Wellington Brewery Boot Lite (3.3%)

We have all heard about how people today, especially millennials and Gen Zs, apparently, are drinking more low and no alcohol products. (And yes, they, or we, are, but the stats show not nearly to the degree some media stories would like you to think.) So it is no great surprise that many craft breweries are experimenting with lower alcohol offerings – in addition to zero alcohol ‘beers’ and hop waters, the latter of which Wellington makes quite well in two different varieties. Hence this spring arrival from Ontario’s second oldest craft brewery.

Quite pale gold in colour, Boot Lite has a sweetly floral, slightly confectionary aroma, with hints of freshly mowed grass and not a lot else going on. On the palate, it begins with a light, malty, and perfumey sweetness, accented by a delicate herbal note, before moving to a (predictably) light body that offers fresh cereal grain, more of the herbal character from the nose, and a gently rising bitterness that serves to dry out the fairly quick finish. A light bodied beer with good flavour progression, but not a whole lot of actual flavour. Best enjoyed cold and with a strong thirst.
