Glenmorangie 10 year old (40%)
A recent rebranding of this venerable, bourbon barrel-matured single malt invites the re-evaluation of the fourth best-selling single malt in the United States. (Figures are unavailable for Canada.) The switch of bottle shape and label is for aesthetic purposes only, though, and the whisky inside is the same as it has ever been, specifically mellow, smooth, on the delicate side of Scottish whisky, and singularly inviting. The nose is soft and perfumey, with citrus and vanilla leading the way, supported by very soft toffee and just a touch of freshly harvested grain. The flavour is similarly soft and almost sensual, with caramel and preserved lemon, floral peach, a hint of orange, and light herbal notes. There is perfumey orange and the merest suggestion dried stone fruit on the finish. Simply lovely, and a classic for a reason.
