The Dalmore Sherry Cask Select 12 (43%)

Having previously reviewed the Dalmore 12 year old, I won’t rehash here the heritage and background of the Dalmore distillery, and neither will I reiterate its traditional emphasis on sherry cask finishing. Suffice to say that this is a most accomplished operation with a lengthy past and a delightful present. As for the rest, I suggest that you follow this link.

Whereas the regular Dalmore 12 is aged in unidentified oloroso sherry casks, the distillery notes that the Select is finished in three varieties of oloroso wood plus Pedro Ximénez casks, which lends it, among other traits, a slightly darker colour than its equally aged portfolio mate.

It is on the nose where the PX casks show the most prominence, giving the whisky a distinctly sweet, chocolate-raisiny aroma, with the raisins the more obvious component and candied ginger, candied orange, and faint vanilla in support. On the palate, it is as sweet as it is smooth, almost creamy, with pillowy soft marzipan and milk chocolate, orange caramel, light notes of golden raisin, and a touch of cinnamon. The finish is equally soft and combines cooked cream with gently oaky notes and a touch of citrus zest.

While not the most complex of sherry cask finished single malts, this must certainly count among the most rounded and expressive, and while not cheap, neither is it out of line these days with other comparable sherry-finished Scottish malts. Definitely a whisky best suited for late night, when the flavours of dinner are fading and the gentle fullness of the spirit may be fully appreciated.
